Sachin became man of the match
In 1999, the first Test match between India and Pakistan was played in Chennai in a span of 9 years. In the first Test match of this three-match series, India suffered a close defeat by 12 runs. Sachin Tendulkar became the man of the match in this match which started from 28 January but there was less happiness because his team lost.

India was defeated by 12 runs
Pakistan, captained by Wasim Akram, scored 238 runs in the first innings, with Moin Khan and Mohammad Yusuf hitting half-centuries. Anil Kumble took 6 wickets, then under the captaincy of Mohammad Azharuddin, India scored 254 runs due to Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid’s Fifty. In the second innings, Shahid Afridi played 141 in 191 balls in excellent style and shared a 97-run partnership with Inzamam-ul-Haq. Pakistan scored 286 to give India a target of 271 runs. Batting at number four, Sachin scored 136 but could not win the team. Saqlain Mushtaq took five wickets for Pakistan, Shahid Afridi three wickets, while captain Wasim Akram took two wickets.
India needed 17 runs and Sachin OUT
Chasing the target, India’s 5 wickets fell to 82 runs, it seemed that the hosts could play to save the match but Sachin and Nayan Mongia shared a century partnership and expectations started rising. Both added 136 runs for the sixth wicket. When Mongia (52) was sent by Wasim Akram to the pavilion, India’s score reached 218 runs. Team India were just 53 runs away from victory with four wickets remaining. Sachin was still at the crease despite back pain. Sunil Joshi and Sachin then added 36 runs for the seventh wicket. When India was just 17 runs away from victory, Sachin was caught by Saqlain at the hands of Akram and immediately stopped the entire Indian innings at 258.
Sachin became emotional after the defeat
When India could not win despite Sachin’s bold innings, he started crying. At that time, Cricket Board of India (BCCI) official Raj Singh Dungarpur had told in an interview that as soon as Sachin was out, he started crying in the dressing room. Even after convincing the then coach of Dungarpur and Team India, Anshuman Gaikwad, Sachin considered himself responsible for the defeat and he kept crying for a long time.

Sachin scored a century in this Test, he was also elected Man of the Match
