America’s leading automobile company Ford Motor Company has decided to close its manufacturing plant in India. The company will now sell only its premium cars as Complete Build Unit (CBU). Ford has taken this decision upset by the loss, and has also assured that the existing customers will continue to get the facilities like service, warranty and parts availability. Ford is not the first automobile company, which has decided to say goodbye to India. Today we are telling you about 5 such big companies, which have closed their business in the world’s fifth largest car-market India.

1. General Motors
General Motors entered India in 1996 with the Opel brand. After this Chevrolet brought the car brand in 2003. Despite having many great models, Chevrolet could not find much success in India. The company could not stand before the popular car companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra. The decision to discontinue its Chevrolet in India was quite a surprise, as the CEO of General Motors had announced a $1 billion investment in India just a few months back.

2. Fiat
Italy’s popular car company Fiat had decided to wrap up business in India last year due to weak sales for a long time. The company had launched many great models like Fiat Punto, Linea, Punto EVO in the Indian market. The company received a good response in the early 1990s. However, as competition increased, Fiat’s performance deteriorated. The reason for this was the design of the cars, lack of features and low mileage.

3. UM Motorcycles
United Motors of America started its business in India in partnership with Lohia Auto. The company introduced many great cruiser bikes, including Renegade Commando, Renegade Sport S and Renegade Classic. Their design was quite different, although they were also criticized for their poor quality. United Motors was aiming to compete with Royal Enfield. Eventually the company left the Indian market in October 2019, causing a lot of ruckus among the dealers. Currently, there is a legal dispute going on between UM and Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA).

4. Harley Davidson
Harley Davidson’s decision to exit India was a big setback for premium bike lovers. The US-based premium bike maker took the decision to shut down the Indian business in September 2020. The prices of the company’s bikes were very expensive, due to which there was negligible sales. Due to which the company took this decision. Harley later entered into an agreement with Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler company. Accordingly, Hero MotoCorp now sells and services Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

5. Premier Automobiles
Premier Automobiles Limited was one of the most successful and popular automobile companies in India. However, the business had to be closed due to low sales. The company became most famous for its cars like Rio and Padmini. The Premier Padmini had a similar look to the Hindustan Ambassador car, which is still being used as taxis in Mumbai. The company started its business in the late 1940s.
