About six million patients in the country require palliative care, but due to lack of palliative care facility, only four percent of the people are able to avail this facility. On the other hand, during corona infection, many patients have come under the category of need for palliative care due to obstruction in the treatment of critical illness. This is to say of Dr. Anjum Khan Jod, Head of Palliative Care Department of Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Center. October 10 is being celebrated as World Palliative Care Day by the World Health Organization. On this occasion, Dr. Anjum said that it has become challenging to deliver palliative care to the needy at the right time during the world epidemic.
Dr. Anjum says that the government or hospital is making efforts at its level during the conference, but for the needy people to get palliative care, it is necessary that NGOs, social service organizations and general public also come forward for it. Providing palliative care is not expensive or expensive; palliative care therapy can also be provided at home through training. For this, it is not mandatory to keep the patient admitted in the hospital.
A lot of work has been done in the last few years on the Palliative Care Program by the government in the country. In the recent past, many works have been done at the district level in the state of Rajasthan, under which doctors and nurses have been trained. On behalf of the National Health Mission, training of palliative care support program has been given to doctors and nursing staff of various districts of Rajasthan state. Dr. Anjum said that on behalf of the Palliative Care Department of Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital, doctors and nursing staff from 22 districts including Jhalawar, Jodhpur, Sriganganagar Alwar, Bhilwara, Nagaur, Tok Pali have been trained in palliative care.
Palliative care is given as a team
Palliative care works as a team to improve the lives of patients battling critical illness. This team consists of doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians. The goal of palliative care is to provide relief to the patient from pain, as well as to increase the morale of the patient and their family by removing the discomfort in the disease.
