England captain Joe Root scored a brilliant century on the first day, showing brilliantly in the first Test match against India in Chennai. Batting at number four, Joe Root completed his century off 164 balls. Root is playing his 100th Test match of his career.

Root completed his century by taking a single off the final ball of the 78th over of Washington Sundar’s innings. This is his 20th century in his Test career. He has also scored 49 half-centuries.

Third English player to score century in 100th Test
Joe Root is the third England player to score a century in the 100th Test, while overall is the 9th player. Coward and Stewart of England had done this before them. Talking of others, the Greenies of the West Indies, Javed Miandad of Pakistan and Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla of South Africa did the same, while Ricky Ponting of Australia scored a century in both innings.

Century in third consecutive test
Joe Root scored a century in the third Test in a row. He has scored centuries in his 98th, 99th and 100th Tests and has also become the first player to do so. He scored his 5th century against India while overall is his 20th Test century.

In the Chennai Test, England won the toss and decided to bat first. His early wickets fell to a score of 63 runs. Rory Burns (33) was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin at the hands of Rishabh Pant behind the wicket, after which Daniel Lawrence (0) was not allowed to open the account by Jaspreet Bumrah. After this, Root along with Dominic Sibley led the innings and brought England’s score to 200.
