Research has revealed this mechanism for the first time, through which proteins damage vascular cells. This mechanism was not understood earlier. Similarly, scientists have long suspected that spike proteins contribute to damage to vascular endothelial cells, but this process was documented for the first time.
In this research, a pseudovirus was formed by the team, which was surrounded by the spike protein of SARS-covid-2. However, there was no real virus in it. The model of animals exposed to this pseudovirus affected the lungs and arteries. This proves that the spike protein is sufficient for disease. Tissue samples showed that endothelial cells on the walls of the pulmonary artery showed swelling.
The team repeated this process in the lab, in which healthy endothelial cells were exposed to spike proteins. It revealed that the spike protein binds ACE2 and damages other cells. This also disrupted the ACE2 module, causing damage to the mitochondria. (IANS)
