London . At least a week’s distance from social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram proves to be helpful in relieving stress, depression, anxiety etc.
According to the study published in the journal ‘Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking’, just one week away from social media proves to be better for health and it reduces symptoms of stress and anxiety.
Jeff Lambert, lead researcher at the University of Bath, said, “We know that social media is used a lot. For this reason, there has also been increased concern about its effect on mental health. Through this study, we tried to find out whether simply not using social media for a week improves mental health.
He said, “We found in research that many participants found their mood better and less anxiety symptoms when they did not use social media for just one week. This shows that even a short break from social media can be positive for health. ,
For the research, 154 participants aged 18 to 72 years were researched. Some of them were asked to continue using social media as before, while others were asked to stop it altogether.
Everyone’s stress, anxiety and health scores were taken at the start of the research. After one week, it was found that participants who distanced themselves from social media had better mental health than participants in the other group.
The participants who were asked to stay away from social media were also using social media for an average of 21 minutes while the other group was on social media for an average of seven hours.
