New York. Scientists have found that vitamin D works to reduce inflammation caused by immune cells, which may be relevant to responses during severe COVID-19. The study demonstrated a mechanism by which vitamin D reduces inflammation caused by T cells. These are important cells of the immune system and are contained as part of the immune response to infection caused by COVID-19.
The team, led by Purdue University, studied and analyzed individual lung cells from eight Kovid-infected people. They found that part of the immune response in the lung cells of people with Covid was going into overdrive, leading to increased lung inflammation.
The team then examined how the viruses affected lung cells in a previous study. Also discovered that viruses can trigger a biochemical pathway, known as the immune complement system.
In normal infections a subset of T cells, a subset of T cells, go through a pro-inflammatory phase, said Majid Kazemian, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Biochemistry at Purdue University.
The pro-inflammatory phase clears the infection, and then the system shuts down and moves into the anti-inflammatory phase. Vitamin-D helps accelerate this transition of T cells from the pro-inflammatory to the anti-inflammatory phase. (IANS)
