Root completed his 18th Test century after lunch with one run in the first over. This is his second century against Sri Lanka. This is the England captain’s first century after scoring 226 against New Zealand in Hamilton in November 2019.
England started the day with 127 runs at the loss of two wickets. The game started late due to rain. On the first day, Johnny Bairstow returned unbeaten after scoring 47 and Route 66. Bairstow was unable to increase his score yesterday. He was made his third victim by Lasith Imbuldenia. The same bowler dismissed Jack Crowley (9) and Dom Sibley (4) on the first day.
After Bairstow’s departure, Dan Lawrence strengthened England with Root. Both shared a 173-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Lorence was dismissed by Kusal Mendis for a total score of 304.
Lorence scored 73 for which he faced six fours and a six while facing 150 balls. Butler then landed on the field and began to extend the innings with Root. It was raining once again during the tea time and hence the last session could not be played.
