Toronto. The amount of viral RNA, the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 in people’s blood, is a reliable indicator, from which it can be detected that now who will die of corona. Researchers have shared this information.
Despite advances in the management of the coronavirus, doctors have found it difficult to identify those at risk of dying from the disease and therefore be able to offer new treatments.
A team led by the Université de Montréal developed a statistical model that uses blood biomarkers of SARS-CoV-2 to identify infected patients who are most at risk of dying from the coronavirus.
He used blood samples collected from 279 infected during hospitalization for corona.
The discovery has been published in the journal Science Advances.
“With our study we are able to determine which biomarkers may be responsible for death 60 days after the onset of symptoms,” said medical professor Dr Daniel Kaufman.
The team also measured the amount of viral RNA and the level of antibodies targeting the virus. Samples were collected 11 days after symptom onset and patients were then monitored for at least 60 days.
To confirm its effectiveness, Kaufman and Brunet-Ratningham tested the model on two independent groups of infected during the first wave of the pandemic and then during the second and third waves.
